GUEST EXPECTATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

1.0 Policy Purpose

The Admission Guest Policy is designed to promote and preserve a safe environment for all who attend and participate in Admission-sponsored events and/or visitors to the Office of Admission. Visitors are subject to federal and state laws, county and municipal ordinances, and applicable policies and procedures in the Vassar College Rules and Regulations. Visitors are expected to act responsibly and respect the rights of others in accordance with federal, state, and local laws.

2.0 Scope

This Policy extends to all guests of admission. This would include visitors to the Office of Admission, prospective students and their families, applicants for admission, contractors and subcontractors, volunteers, former students, and students on leave. The terms visitor and guest are used interchangeably. Admission employees are defined as administrators and staff within the Office of Admission, including student employees.

3.0 Policy

3.1 General Policies

  • For safety and privacy, we do not permit any recordings or photos of our staff, students, or guests.

  • Pets are not permitted; service animals are welcome. This includes campus tours.

Requirements of service animals and their owners include:

  • State law requires that all dogs be licensed.

  • Service animals must always wear an owner identification tag (which includes the name and phone number of the guest), license tag and rabies vaccination tag. All animals must be immunized against rabies and in good health.

  • Animals must be on a leash, harness or other type of restraint at all times, unless the guest is unable to restrain the animal on a leash because of a disability.

  • The owner must be in full control of the animal at all times. Reasonable behavior is expected from service animals and their owners while on college property. The owners of disruptive or aggressive service animals may be asked to remove them from the College.

3.2 Responsibilities of Visitors

Visitors are responsible for complying with all applicable College policies and procedures that apply to employees and students in relation to conduct while on College property. Visitors are expected to exhibit behavior, conduct, and demeanor that aligns with the educational mission, goals, and interests of Vassar College. Visitors are expected to conduct themselves in such a manner as to not interfere with the business of the College.

3.3 Prohibited Conduct. Unacceptable behavior includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Harassing language or language of a discriminatory nature.

  • Messages that harass or threaten others (print, phone, email, mail, social media, etc.).

  • Excessive or disruptive noise. This includes noise that prevents the orderly conduct of a Campus function, or blocks the legitimate activity of any person on the Vassar campus.

  • Consumption of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, or illegal substances on campus. Vassar is a smoke free campus

  • Disorderly, disruptive, or threatening behavior, such as engaging in unwanted or inappropriate interactions.

  • Impeding an event or the normal course of the College’s business.

  • Making threats to the personal safety of employees, or committing violent acts.

  • Engaging in or contributing to sexual offenses, including indecent exposure, inappropriate sexual advances (physical or verbal), or contributing to a sexually harassing environment.

  • Any language or behavior that is undesirable or unpleasant which creates an uncomfortable environment for others, as reasonably decided by admission employees, at the discretion of admission employees.

  • Violations of local, state, or federal law.

  • Destroying or damaging College property.

Those behaving in an unacceptable manner will be asked once by admission employees to modify their behavior or to leave the premises. Campus Safety will be contacted if necessary. Violations may result in disciplinary actions as described below.

4.0 Violations

Those behaving in an unacceptable manner will be asked once by admission employees to modify their behavior or to leave the premises. 

At any time Campus Safety can be called. Campus Safety provides support and safety services to the campus community. 

Depending on the nature and severity of the violation, admission employees and/or Campus Safety may:

  • Ask a visitor to leave

  • Issue a verbal or written warning

  • Issue trespass notices or Persona Non Grata letters banning individuals from Vassar College property and/or Vassar College events when individuals are not current members of the campus community (i.e. former employees, alumni, visitors)

  • Contact an applicable local law enforcement agency.

The decision by The Office of Admission and/or Campus Safety is final and unappealable.
